Obstetric ultrasound. Expectant parents watching a monitor displaying an image of their unborn baby. The image is obtained by scanning the mother's abdomen with an ultrasound transducer. The transducer emits high frequency sound waves that are echoed back and used to create an image. This is a safe, non-invasive method of assessing the health of the developing foetus.
