Sodium. Chunk of the reactive alkali metal sodium (Na), cut with a knife to reveal its shiny surface. Sodium reacts rapidly with the water and oxygen in the air, forming the tarnished oxide and hydroxide surface seen on the uncut surfaces. It is not found in its elemental form in nature, due to its reactivity, and is mainly found in the salt (sodium chloride) of salt deposits and sea water.
