Phosphorus (atomic number: 15, symbol: p) is an essential component of living organisms and is found in nervous tissue, bones, and cell protoplasm. It exists in red, white (or yellow), red, and black (or violet) allotropic forms. Ordinary phosphorus is white. In its pure form phosphorus is colourless and transparent and is converted to red phosphorous in sunlight.
