Bismuth, scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Bismuth is a heavy, brittle, crystalline metal. It is a chemical element that has extremely low thermal and electrical conductivities and is the most diamagnetic (repels magnets) of all metals. Compounds and alloys of bismuth are used widely in cosmetics, medicines, magnets and solders. Magnification: x4250 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
