The spiralling strands of the DNA helix are composed of complex chemical groups called nucleotides, which consist of a sugar phosphate and a base group. Complementary pairing between the base groups (rods) of nucleotides on opposite strands holds the helix together. DNA contains the genetic instructions necessary for the development and functioning of every living organism. It is thought to have originated on Earth from an early sea known as the primeval soup.
