DNA fingerprint. Conceptual image representing the individuality of DNA, showing the letters of the genetic code superimposed on a fingerprint. The letters A, T, C and G stand for adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine. These four nucleotide bases form the links between the two spiral strands in a DNA double helix. DNA is the molecule that controls the growth and development of all living things. The sequence of the four bases along the strands forms the genetic code. Every individual has a different base sequence. DNA sequencing is widely used in genealogy, forensic science and medical research.
