DNA molecule. Computer artwork of the double helix strands of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). The clockwise spiralling strands are composed of complex chemical units called nucleotides. The strands are linked together by hydrogen bonds (not seen) between the bases of the nucleotides (adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine). The genetic information (blueprint) of DNA is contained in the sequence of these bases. This unique genetic code provides the instructions necessary for the development and functioning of every living organism.
