DNA helices. Models of the spiral double helix structure of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) over an autoradiogram. The double helix is formed by two spiralling strands of sugar phosphates. Nucleotide bases are arrayed along these strands as complementary base pairings, which hold the two strands together to form the DNA 'ladder'. The sequence of the nucleotide bases form the genetic code for protein synthesis and the functioning and growth of every living organism. Each of the bands in the autoradiogram represents the position of one of the bases in the genetic code.
