DNA, computer artwork. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) consists of two strands of sugar phosphates that form a double helix (spiral). The strands are held together by interactions between nucleotide bases on each strand. Here, the atoms (balls) that make up these units are shown in two different colour schemes. At left, the sugar phosphates contain the phosphorus atoms (pink), while the bases contain nitrogen atoms (red). Both contain carbon (blue) and oxygen (light blue) atoms. The four types of nucleotide base are adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine. The base sequence is the inherited genetic code that controls growth and development.
