Antisense DNA research. Molecular graphic of an "antisense" molecule binding to a fragment of human DNA. Part of a double helix DNA molecule is seen (yellow) containing a gene coloured red/blue. Binding to the gene is an antisense molecule (white, green), a piece of DNA made from oligo- nucleotides and genetically engineered to fit onto the gene. It is hoped that this antisense molecule will block the gene and prevent it from expressing itself. Antisense molecules may be developed to block genes which cause cancer cells to divide; prevent multiplication of the HIV virus (causing AIDS); and treat genetically inherited diseases.
