DNA fingerprinting. Preparation of the agarose electrophoresis gel used to separate fragments of DNA into bands. Fragments of an individual's DNA are usually extracted from white blood cells, sperm or hair follicles. The pattern of DNA bands produced is unique to one individual human being or animal, & forms a kind of genetic "identity card". DNA fingerprints are used to prove conclusively whether people are related, for instance in immigration disputes. The technique is also used to identify & convict criminals from tissues left at the scene of a crime. Photographed at ICI Cellmark Diagnostics, Oxfordshire. MODEL NICOLA.
