DNA fingerprinting. Sample tube containing pellet of human DNA (white): DNA bands on the electrophoresis gel in background appear pink when viewed under ultraviolet light. The banding pattern of a pure, sample of DNA is unique to one person. DNA fingerprinting may be used to prove family relationships, such as the paternity of a child, because some of the parent's DNA bands will match some of the bands in the child's fingerprint. The technique has also been used to identify & convict criminals from blood, semen or hair left at the scene of a crime. This highly- sensitive technique demands scrupulous care & accuracy throughout its stages.
