Gene therapy research. Analysis of the structure of DNA. Here an X-ray (autoradiograph) of bands of human DNA fragments are seen, prepared using the technique of gel electrophoresis. The black bands reveal the structure of the gene sequences in DNA, where many bands may comprise one gene. A sequence marked here is part of the research conducted into cancer gene therapy at Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London, UK. Scientists have successfully "switched on" melanoma cancer cells with a marker gene. The aim now is to use the genetic switch to express an anti-cancer gene which will help the body to destroy melanoma cancer cells.
