DNA fingerprinting. A scientist checking the progress of gel electrophoresis of a sample of DNA. The DNA is split into fragments chemically, and placed in solution. This is then introduced into a gel, across which is applied an electrical potential. The fragments then migrate across the gel at a rate in proportion to their mass. By adding a fluorescent marker chemical to the solution, the progress of the separation may be seen. A comparison of the pattern of fragments between samples is the basis of DNA fingerprinting.
