DNA mapping. Computer display showing the sequence of bases in a fragment of DNA; each row shows the structure of adjacent pieces of DNA. DNA molecules are formed by two interwound strands twisted into a helical shape. The two strands are linked by pairs of substances called bases, of which there are four types known as adenine (green), guanine (yellow), thymine (red) and cytosine (blue). The image was taken at the Genethon laboratory near Paris which participates in the Human Genome project. It involves several laboratories around the world and it is aimed at mapping the DNA of every chromosome to locate the genes responsible for a number of inherited diseases.
