Electrophoresis of human blood serum. This technique separates charged molecules such as proteins, nucleic acids and their degradation products kept in a buffer solution. A sample of the solution to analyse is allowed to move through a porous medium such as gel or cellulose acetate as in this case. An electric field is generated through the buffer and the charged molecules, due to their different mobilities, form multiple bands in the medium. The bands may be stained or identified by some labelling device such as fluorescence or radioactive marking. Blood serum consists of plasma deprived of fibrinogen and other clotting proteins.
