Human Genome project. Automated electrophoresis equipment used to study the structure of DNA. It is found at the Genethon laboratory near Paris which, together with other laboratories around the world, participates in the Human Genome project. It is aimed at mapping the DNA of every chromosome to locate the genes (small fragments of DNA) responsible for a number of inherited disorders. A DNA molecule is composed of two strands twisted into a helical shape and linked together by pairs of substances called bases. With the electrophoresis technique it is possible to find the sequence in which the bases are arranged along the DNA molecule.
