DNA research. Close-up of a test tube with a sample of human DNA which contains between 50,000 to 100,000 genes. The DNA has precipitated out in phenol, and resembles a white floating "medusa". The DNA sample was obtained from lymphocytes (white blood cells) in the blood of a patient. The image was taken at the Genethon laboratory near Paris which, together with other laboratories around the world, is involved in the Human Genome Project. This project is aimed at mapping the DNA of every human chromosome in order to locate genes responsible for a number of inherited disorders.
