Cloning DNA fragments. Researcher pipettes samples that are loaded into Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) equipment, during the cloning of DNA fragments. The technique of PCR is used to clone fragments (make identical copies) of DNA. So called because the enzyme DNA polymerase is used in this process, single strands of DNA are made to synthesize mirror copies of themselves. If this process is repeated, a large number of duplicates of the original fragment can be produced for analysis. PCR is useful where only a tiny amount of DNA can be isolated. In this case, the DNA was extracted from foetal cells in the blood of a pregnant mother, to conduct foetal genetic tests.
