Gene therapy research on AIDS. View of an auto- radiogram film used in gene therapy research on HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). HIV is the virus which causes AIDS. Here, DNA from the immune system of a patient infected with HIV is being analysed. A "genetic fingerprint" is seen under ultraviolet light; pink bands represent the sequence of base pairs in the genetic code. By understanding this genetic sequence, gene therapy and antiviral drugs may be developed to act on the immune system of AIDS patients, preventing the HIV virus from reproducing. Photographed in the laboratory of AIDS researcher M. Mehtali at Strasbourg, France.
