DNA research. A masked research biologist holds a test tube of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) over an autoradiogram DNA banding pattern produced by gel electrophoresis. The DNA molecule, found in the chromosomes of cell nuclei, carries genetic information (genes) spelt out in a chemical code along its length. The banding pattern seen here is produced by breaking down a sample of DNA into fragments, which are then run along a gel by an electric current. Fragments of the same length collect in discrete bands. This technique is used in DNA fingerprinting and in DNA sequencing, where the chemical code of a gene is worked out.
