Caption

DNA research. Technician holding a tube containing purified deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and examining an autoradiogram. The technician is wearing gloves and a face mask to keep the area sterile. The DNA in the tube can be seen as an amorphous white mass. An autoradiogram is a print made from DNA which has been fragmented and allowed to move over a gel, separating into constituent parts. Autoradiograms are made after the DNA has been treated to make it radioactive, and the radioactivity gives rise to the dark bands on the print. The pattern on the print gives valuable information about the sequence of the DNA bases (the genetic code).
