DNA sequence. View of two test tubes filled with clear liquid over an autoradiogram of a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) sequence. Here the DNA sequence is made up of rows of irregularly spaced black bands. A DNA sample can be taken from body fluids such as blood, and body tissues. The DNA is then fragmented with enzymes, placed in a gel and separated to form the banding pattern. The bands represent the positioning of the four base pairs on the DNA molecule. The bases make up a genetic code in the form of genes which is unique to every person. DNA samples can be used to test for paternity or as evidence in certain criminal investigations.
