On the bench is electrophoresis equipment containing gels used to separate fragments of DNA into bands. DNA is the molecule found in all cells which contains the genetic hereditary material. Here, the rows of sequenced DNA form irregularly spaced black bands. The bands represent the positioning of the four base pairs in the DNA molecule which make up the genetic code in the form of genes. A DNA finger- print is unique to every person and can be used to identify the parents of a child, or criminals.
