DNA sequencing. Researcher's hand studying the banded DNA sequences or "genetic fingerprints" of an autoradiograph. The bands represent the seque- nce of bases that form the genetic code of this section of plant DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA encodes, transmits and controls the development of living organisms' hereditary traits. The DNA sample was cut into fragments by an enzyme and marked with radioactive tags. The fragments were placed in a gel and separated by electrophoresis, the application of an electric charge. An autoradiograph of the resulting DNA bands was made by placing a radiographic film on the gel.
