DNA research. Female technician studying the banded DNA sequences or genetic fingerprints of an autoradiogram. She is seen with an artwork of the 23 pairs of human chromosomes. Each of the bands on the autoradiogram represents one of four chemical bases called nucleotides. The genetic code is formed by the sequence of these bases. This karyotype shows the total complement of male chromosomes. The chromosomes contain the whole of the genetic code or genome. The autorad- iogram was produced by placing a radiographic film on a gel containing radioactively-tagged fragments of DNA. DNA sequencing is used in forensic science and medical research.
