DNA sample. Sample vial containing DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), the molecule that encodes the hereditary characteristics of living organisms. The vial has the letters DMD on its label. This indicates that the DNA will be tested to determine if it contains an abnormal Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) gene. DMD is an inherited disease that is characterised by progressive muscle weakness and is eventually fatal. DMD is sex-linked, where symptoms are only seen in males, but females can carry the gene for this condition without being affected, and so can pass it on to their sons.
