DNA microchip being held by a hand. Also called a biochip or microarray, this is a collection of miniaturised test sites (microarrays). It allows many tests to be carried out simultaneously in order to achieve greater throughput and speed. Tests include recognition of thousands of genes at a time and analysis of events in a single cell. Biochips have a variety of applications: research, medicine, pharmaceutics, diagnosis and treatment, public health, environment, biological engineering and biotechnology. This one is based on a mica substrate, and is a high-density DNA microchip, allowing analysis of 8100 samples of DNA. The samples are added robotically. Photographed in France.
