Technician monitoring the purification of monoclonal antibodies by ion exchange chromatography, one of the final stages in a large-scale production process. The cylindrical apparatus (bottom foreground) contains an anion exchange resin which is used to remove contaminating proteins from the antibody fluid. The refined antibodies can be used as vaccines or in immunoassay tests to detect the presence of specific antigens.
