Fermentation laboratory. A technician operates a pilot scale commercial fermentation unit in a biotechnology laboratory. Fermenters of this type are used to grow genetically engineered cultures of bacteria, viruses and micro-organisms in bulk, at suitable temperatures and with the right mix of nutrients. Under these conditions the cultures can produce a maximum yield of product on a large scale. Substances such as the drug interferon and monoclonal antibodies are produced in this way.
