Microbe fermentation unit for the production of hormones and enzymes for medical and industrial use. This is a method of solid state fermentation called tray or 'koji' fermentation, where recombinant microbes are grown on solid substrates, such as bran, in incubator trays. Recombinant microbes have been genetically engineered to produce a drug or enzyme; for example the human hormone insulin, or enzymes for use in the food industry. After fermentation in these units, the microbes are separated from the product, which is then purified. Photographed in 2004 at Biocon, a biotechnology company in Bangalore, India.
