Genetically engineered tomatoes. View of a pack of genetically engineered tomatoes. By altering the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) in the genes of the tomato, different properties can be introduced to the plant. Another type of tomato, the Flavr Savr, was the first genetically engineered food to be sold, in 1994. The genetic engineering of tomatoes may help to avoid spoilage during storage and transportation.
