Genetically-engineered fruit. Conceptual image of square fruit: an apple, orange and strawberry, to depict the genetic engineering of food. Genetically-engineered fruit or genetically- modified fruit (GM fruit) is where DNA (deoxyribo- nucleic acid) is introduced into the fruit. Genetic engineering makes it possible to introduce genes into an organism that may have originated in an entirely different species. This is impossible to achieve by conventional breeding. Major characteristics of the fruit may be changed in this way to make them more resistant to fungal moulds or affect their ripening.
