Genetic modification of plants is done to introduce beneficial properties to the plant that it does not naturally possess, such as a resistance to pests (or pesticides), or a slow rate of spoilage. It is done by introducing DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) from another species into the genes of the soya bean. DNA is the molecule which contains the genetic code, and determines every characteristic of an organism. Soya beans are used in a variety of foods, from soy sauce to margarines and cheeses.
