Genetically engineered wheat. Hand holding a sealed test tube containing a seedling of genetically engineered wheat. The seedling is grown in a special nutrient gel in a protective environment. The process of genetically engineering crops can protect them against excess cold, parasites and diseases, and ensure that there is always a harvest. It can also make the crop more resistant to spoilage after it has been harvested. It is done by introducing DNA from a plant with the desired trait into the cells of the developing crop plant. These effects cannot be achieved by cross breeding.
