Plant culture laboratory. Technician examining a young tomato plant (Lycopersicon sp.) in a culture laboratory. The cultures are grown under carefully controlled conditions for research on nutrition, pest resistance, gene mapping and genetic engineering. Gene mapping allows more efficient breeding of tomato plants for desirable qualities. Similarly, genetic engineering can produce new varieties with improved yield and resistance to pests and pollution. Photographed in laboratories at Sutton Bonnington, part of the University of Nottingham, England.
