Human protein research. Researchers wearing protective clothing in a sterile production room. The vats seen are storing human proteins, produced by genetically modified (GM) tobacco. The tobacco is a transgenic (organism with genes from another species) plant that has been manipulated to produce a human protein, such as blood albumen and gastric lipase. These proteins, which can be extracted from the leaves, may then be used to treat people with hereditary and other disorders. Photographed at the Meristem Therapeutics' Clermont Ferrand laboratory, France.
