Caption

Atomic structure. Computer artwork representing a single atom of oxygen (symbol: O). This is the traditional way the structure of an atom is depicted, showing electrons orbiting in paths around a central nucleus. Oxygen contains eight electrons (blurred dots on circular orbits), and a nucleus which has eight protons (pale green, five seen) and eight neutrons (pale blue, four seen). The number of electrically positive protons balances the number of negative electrons. This image is highly schematic. It is now believed that electrons inhabit a "cloud of probability" rather called the Bohr model), as here.
