Trangenic mouse with muscular dystrophy. Gloved hand holds a transgenic mouse (type: mdx) whose muscles lack dystrophine. This experiment is aimed at understanding the genetic causes of muscular dystrophy in humans. The mouse has received a virus vector which has infected its muscle cells & tranformed them genetically. Muscular dystrophy in humans is an inherited muscle disorder in which there is slow but progressive degeneration of muscle fibres. No curative treatment is known. It is hoped by this research to determine the genetic basis of this disease, and develop a gene therapy. Photographed in the Genetic Laboratories of the CNRS-IGR in Paris, France.
