Caption

Making identical twins. Illustration of the experimental procedure to produce identical twins from a single human embryo cell. First, the egg cell is fertilized in vitro by sperm (top). An enzyme is then used to strip away the protective zona pellucida layer after the embryo has divided into two cells. The two cells are then separated and coated with an artificial zona pellucida (yellow) derived from seaweed.
