Ecotron. Dr Lindsey Thompson, ecologist, with a tray of plants for the Ecotron model community. The aim of the Ecotron project is to study the effect of species diversity and changing climate on simple ecosystems. This is done by looking at the interaction of small numbers of plant and insect species under tightly-controlled conditions. Each experiment occupies a 4 square metre sealed chamber. Researchers control the amount of light and water fed into the model ecosystem, and may analyse the air in the chamber for gases such as carbon dioxide and oxygen. Plants and insects used in the experiments are reared in similar controlled conditions.
