Kidney research. Scientists use a computer in a microbiology laboratory that performs research into kidneys. A simplified diagram on the wall shows how the kidney functions. The kidney contains structures called nephrons. The nephron extracts urine (yellow) from blood vessels (red) using the glomerulus. The urine passes down a tubule to a collecting duct that leads to the bladder. CROWN COPYRIGHT UNDER LICENCE FROM THE HEALTH & SAFETY LABORATORY & CONTROLLER OF HER MAJESTY'S STATIONERY OFFICE.
