Proteomics research. Protein separation on a two- dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) plate. The proteins are from nematode worms. Each dot is a different protein, which will be removed from the plate and studied. Proteins are separated by their mass and charge. An electric field and a pH gradient are set up at right angles to each other on the plate. Studying the structure and function of proteins (proteomics) improves understanding of how an organism works. Photographed at Aberystwyth University, Wales, UK.
