Caption

Researcher studying T-cell cultures. T-cells are a type of white blood cell. They divide rapidly when they encounter a foreign substance in the body, and thus are crucial for mediating the immune response. The scientist is a nutritional immunologist, who has developed a technique for culturing T-cells from blood samples in order to measure the immune response. As T-cell proliferation is affected by the smallest of nutritional variations, the extent of the immune response can indicate even tiny deficiencies.
