Enzyme extraction research. Chemist extracting an enzyme from a bacterium found in shipworms that can be used as a stain remover in laundry detergents. Shipworms are marine molluscs in the family Teredinidae. Enzymes are used in laundry detergents to digest protein-, fat- or carbohydrate- based stains and odours. This research was performed for the United States Department of Agriculture.
