Agricultural science research. Scientists examining a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the abdomen of a pig. An MRI scan uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to generate images of the body and its internal structures. The technology allows the scientists to analyse the animal's fat-to-lean ratio, and to discover the effects of changes in diet. This provides information about the quality of the meat the animal will yield. The MRI chamber containing the pig, manned by one of the scientists, is visible at top. This research was performed for the United States Department of Agriculture.
