Fruit spoiling research. Technician infecting a mango with a fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) larva during experiments to determine the best way of preserving fruit during shipping. Refrigeration helps to preserve fruit over long journeys, but it does not stop fruit flies from proliferating. By keeping the fruit in various environments which are tightly controlled for humidity and gas composition, it is hoped that optimal conditions for shipping will be identified. This research was performed for the United States Department of Agriculture at the Subtropical Agricultural Research Laboratory, Texas, USA.
