Mycorrhiza research. Researcher pipetting DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) from a mycorrhizal fungus found in agricultural soil. The DNA has been run on an electrophoresis gel (seen on screen in background). The bands on the gel show the position of the four nucleotide bases of DNA. The sequence of bases make up genes, which encode an organism's genetic information. A mycorrhiza is an association between a soil fungus and the roots of a vascular plant. Both organisms benefit from the association. Crops that are associated with mycorrhizal fungi show improved yields.
