Plant research. Plants growing in pots in a laboratory. The plants in the left tray have been exposed to short wavelength ultraviolet (UVC) light, while the plants in the right tray have not. Exposing plants to UVC light is known as ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI). It is a sterilisation method that is used in a variety of applications, such as food, air and water purification. UV light has been a known mutagen (mutation-causing agent) for more than 100 years.
