Hydrobiology research. Scientist preparing a fish sample from a water reservoir for analysis under a light microscope as part of his hydrobiology research. Hydrobiology is the study of life in water. It is a sub-discipline of ecology restricted to aquatic environments and their inhabitants. Fish from the reservoir are heavily contaminated with mercury, a toxic pollutant. A gold mine near the reservoir uses mercury to amalgamate the gold, which is polluting the surrounding areas. Photographed in Petit-Saut, French Guiana.
